Description
Is that skull looking at you funny? Maybe! Old Five Eyes gets his name from the five glowing pupils that appear to shine from one of his eyes. (Actually, the effect is because he didn't settle correctly in the mold, but I wouldn't tell him that.) His stare may be lopsided, but he still rolls well and makes a great pick for players who enjoy dice with a little character baked in.
Due to the scenic design, balance isn’t guaranteed—but I did my best to center the LEDs for a fair roll, and haven't noticed any obvious imbalances in my casual observations.
The powered dice tray is cast in black resin with a deep burgundy felt liner, giving Old Five-Eyes a backdrop that suits his eerie glow. The felt keeps rolls quiet while letting the red light feel just a little more ominous.
About Light-Up Dice
- This d20 contains tiny wireless LEDs that light up when they pass near the powered dice tray. Lighting depends on alignment—so while they don’t glow every time, most rolls produce at least a flicker.
- This scenic-style d20 is fully playable, but not precision-balanced. I let the scene dictate where the lights should go, rather than forcing them into a perfect center. While I haven't noticed any obvious imbalances, it's probably not your best choice to use in tournament or high-stakes play.
- The dice tray is the power source. It must be plugged into a wall outlet, power bank, or other electric source in order for the dice to light.
- There are no batteries in my light-up dice, and they don’t need to be charged.
- The LEDs are expected to last around 8,000 hours. (That’s a lot of game nights.) They’re sealed inside the dice and cannot be replaced—but for most users, they’ll last for years.
- The jumbo d20 measures approximately 33mm tall when resting on the table. The dice tray is roughly 7x8 inches—small enough to fit on your table but big enough that you can roll a fistful of dice on it.
-
These are handmade resin dice, and like all handmade things, small variations and surface imperfections may occur. They are cast, sanded, and polished by hand—not mass-produced. The dice tray, too, is cast resin, and goes thru the same polishing process as my handmade dice—though admittedly a bit less rigorously.
-
The glow is part of the experience, but not the whole point. These dice are designed to feel good in your hand and look beautiful on your table—even when they’re not lit.
Notable Quirks
Old Five Eyes didn't want to go where he was told! Because the blank didn't settle in the mold correctly, in addition to his quirky stare, his base is a little off center, and some of the numbers are not as cleanly molded as they would be otherwise. See pictures for reference. I've discounted him accordingly.
